Winner Spotlight 1.2: Set the Scene

Congratulations to our Judges’ Choice for Challenge 1.2: Anne-Marie Kofoed!

About Anne-Marie:

Anne-Marie lives in Denmark and hides in the magic between the pages of a book whenever real life allows it. With three girls and a loving husband, she navigates through life with her muse as her constant companion.

As a child, she was an avid reader, and she soon began to write stories of her own. It all started with fanfiction. Though comfortable with the long form, she has fallen in love with flash and microfiction and regularly competes in international writing contests. She has a handful of flash and micro fictions accepted in a couple of anthologies and literary journals. In 2025 she’ll self-publish her first full-length novel.

Her entry “Counting Doesn’t Count” explores a chance first meeting between Millie and JJ, making effective use of description to help set the scene.

One of our favourite snippets from her entry was:

There was a worn-down makeshift path leading behind the cottage. She walked past the rose garden with her Gran’s beloved red roses. Leaning over, she inhaled deeply from their familiar fragrance. Closing her eyes, she pictured her Gran snipping and trimming the rose bushes. Taking another whiff, the image changed to the moment she’d seen her Gran lying on her red pillowcase, the scent of roses filling the room. Her soul had already left through the open window, right next to the roses.

This is a great example of how little details can make a big impact! It’s only through the evocative description of the garden, in particular the roses, that we fully understand the deep emotional connection Millie has with her surroundings. A powerful excerpt from a wonderful piece!
