Congratulations to our Judges’ Choice for Challenge 1: Katie Kent!
About Katie:
Katie Kent’s fiction has been published in Youth Imagination, Breath and Shadow and Northern Gravy, and a number of anthologies. She won first place in Fusilli Writing's flash fiction competition, and second place in three Writing Magazine short story competitions.
Her entry “Give Me Another Chance” explored the complicated relationship between Jasmine and Abby, clearly demonstrating how the protagonist’s flaw impacted on a crucial moment.
One of our favourite snippets from her entry was:
“Just the one. It’s a special occasion.” To be honest, the nerves are charging around my body like a cat chasing a ball of string, and I need something to bolster my courage for the proposal. I haven’t had a drink in over a month.
One won’t kill me. I can totally stop at one.
Not only do we get a glimpse into Jasmine's jittery state of mind as she approaches this very important moment (no spoilers!), but we can also see how easily she succumbs to her significant flaw. We thought this was a great example of characterisation in a stand-out piece!
