Be a better writer.

The Writer's Workout is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers.

Hey there!

Welcome to The Writer's Workout. Whether you're new to the craft, coming back after time away, or a seasoned professional, we can help you be a better writer.

If you missed our super amazing CONFERENCE! March 15-17, don't fret. In typical Writer's Workout fashion, most of these videos are still available for you to watch, pause, take notes, and otherwise swoon over as you dream the Big Dreams and plan your awesome future. Learn more about our fantastic guests and find individual links to the 40 donated videos from authors, editors, agents, and publishers on the conference page. Download the handouts, check out the giveaways, and please help support these folks if you can.

If you'd prefer the full conference experience instead, here's the playlist

Open opportunities:

WayWords issue 15 is open for themes of "nostalgia" through May 20.

If you submitted for issue 14 (themes of "mythology"), I reached out to everyone on April 8.

Fiction Potluck is open for "MG & YA Milestones" through May 20. This quarter's guest judge is Amy Nielsen; the challenge is sponsored by Duotrope. Amy's also giving away query package critiques to the top spots! Find more details about this quarter's amazing prizes on the Potluck page.

Tales from the Kitchen is open through September 16. This year's anthology focuses on the space central to the family, where people gather and grow. I'll be your editor again this year; I'm looking forward to what you create!

About me: Theresa is a co-founder of The Writer's Workout, a crime fiction writer, and a freelance developmental editor at Premier Literary Services. She is looking for well-planned plots, occasional humor, and strong character development and growth.

Mock Events for this year's Writer's Games are scheduled for April 19 & 26—no registration required. Click here for info on these challenges.

Early registration is open April 1-30; if you earned this space and can't find access, please email me at Theresa.Green [at] writersworkout.net.

Public registration opens May 1.

Around WW:

Our focal topic in April is pacing: how to move readers through your story with sentence and paragraph structure. Look for some great tips from Lindsey on April 4.

New Back to Basics on point of view is available right now!

Other updates and coming soon:

I've made a TON of changes (mostly invisible background stuff) to this website. For a full list, click here.

Writer's Games dates are available on the Games page. Read the 2024 Update email here. I finally finished all Games-related pages I could think of: Archive, FAQInfo, and Rules. I also added a ton of new Events to the list with more on the way.

Find quick access to announcements from any page through the pinned note at the top.

Happy writing!

—Theresa
